What is post pregnancy breast and body surgery?

Post-pregnancy surgery (sometimes referred to as a ‘Mummy Makeover’) refers to a combination of breast and body procedures that focus on body changes that can occur after pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.

The most common example of this combination is a breast reduction with liposuction, and abdominoplasty with muscle repair – but can include any breast or body procedure.

Is post-pregnancy surgery for me?

Deciding to have surgery is a personal choice, and can be a difficult decision to commit to.

Some indications for surgery may include:

  • Large breasts results in back and shoulder ache.
  • Breast deflation or breast ptosis.
  • Excess loose abdominal skin that won’t retract.
  • Separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti).

Other important criteria include:

  • You are in relatively good health, including being a non-smoker.
  • You are not having any further children.
  • You finished breastfeeding at least six months ago.

What is the recovery after post pregnancy surgery?

At a glance, post pregnancy surgery involves:

  • Time in surgery: 3 – 5 hours.
  • Time in hospital: 2 – 3 nights.
  • Time off work: 2 weeks.
  • Time before driving: 1 – 2 weeks.
  • Time until normal non-strenuous activities: 3 weeks
  • Time wearing a supportive garment: 6 weeks.
  • Time before exercise including gym: 6 weeks.
  • Time until final result: 6 months.

What are the risks associated with post pregnancy surgery?

The risks of any surgery will vary depending on what procedures are involved.

  • Infection
  • Bleeding or haematoma
  • Poor wound healing
  • Abnormal scars, such as raised scars, or stretched scars
  • Seroma / fluid build ups
  • Asymmetry or irregular contours
  • Numbness or nerve damage affecting abdomen, breast, nipples
  • Breast implant complications (such as malposition, rupture, contracture)
  • Necrosis, either of skin or nipples
  • Blood clots in legs / lungs
  • Unsatisfactory aesthetic outcome
  • Revision surgery

Post pregnancy surgery is like any surgical procedures in that it carries risks – therefore before having any operation you should always speak to an appropriately qualified health practitioner about these potential risks.

How soon after childbirth can I have breast or body surgery?

Pregnancy, childbirth, and breast feeding can all have dramatic effects on your body, and it takes time for everything to return to its normal state.

For those reasons it’s recommended to wait until twelve months after childbirth, and six months after breastfeeding, before having post-pregnancy surgery.

Can I get post-pregnancy surgery if I plan to have more children?

It’s best to wait until you’re done having kids, as pregnancy can undo results.

How much does post-pregnancy surgery cost in Perth?

Costs associated with post-pregnancy surgery in Perth can be confusing, especially considering the different combinations of surgical procedures that can be offered. To try to make things clearer we’ve listed the the following fees that make up the final cost.

  • Surgical fee: the cost of surgery will depend on what breast and tummy surgeries you undergo. Some parts of your procedures may be partially covered by Medicare and your private health fund, however this is not usually the case. Indicative price ranges of some of the procedures are listed below:
    • Breast augmentation: $12990 (includes implants, anaesthesia, and hospital fee)
    • Breast reduction or breast lift: $6000 – $8000.
    • Abdominoplasty: $12000.
  • Anaesthesia fees: It is difficult to give accurate estimations for anaesthesia fees without a consultation. Your anaesthesia fees will depend on what procedures you are having, the duration of your surgery, whether or not the procedures are Medicare rebatable, whether or not you have private health insurance, and if your particular policy includes the relevant procedure.
  • Hospital admission fees: If you meet the criteria for Medicare rebatable surgery, then part of your hospital admission may be paid for by your health fund. This would depend on you meeting the Medicare criteria for the procedure, and you having the appropriate health coverage. If this is not the case, then Dr Colbert’s team will organise an individual quote for you from the hospital.
  • Please note an accurate quote can only be provided after a consultation with Dr Colbert.
