What happens at my consultation?

Your initial consultation with Dr Colbert will take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the nature of your consultation.

  • The consultation begins with Dr Colbert discussing your goals and expectations from surgery.
  • Dr Colbert will also ask about any relevant previous medical history, including any medications you take or any allergies you have.

What do I bring to my consult?
  • Your referral (if you have one)
  • Your Medicare card
  • Your private health insurance card
  • Any medical documents or information that you may have
  • A list of questions that you may have about your procedure

Can I bring my children?

How much does a consult cost?

A standard consultation with Dr Colbert regarding a skin lesion or non-cosmetic operation costs $200.00.

A cosmetic or reconstructive consultation (including breast reduction, breast implant removal, tummy tuck) with Dr Colbert is a longer appointment and costs $250.00.

If your consult is regarding a procedure that attracts a Medicare rebate and you have a referral from your General Practitioner or Medical Specialist, then you will receive a $76.15 rebate on your consult fee.

Does Dr Colbert perform all of the operations himself?

Yes, Dr Colbert performs all of the operations himself.

Will insurance cover my surgery?

Depending on what procedure you’re having, some of your fees may be partially subsidised by Medicare and your private health fund, however there is often an out of pocket gap to pay. All of these costs are made clear before any surgery is performed. It is always recommended to check with your private health insurer if your procedure is covered, or if you have any exclusions on your policy.

Can I get a quote over the phone?

Unfortunately an accurate quote is only possible after a face to face consultation. For a personalised quote then you should book in for a consult, as every patient is different and requires a completely personalised approach. Often patients who come in looking for a particular procedure can actually get the same results with an alternative procedure that costs less, meaning that the investment in a consultation is a wise decision.

What is the difference between a Plastic Surgeon and a Cosmetic Surgeon?

A short answer, is approximately 10 or more years of training.

A longer answer, is that as a fully qualified Plastic Surgeon Dr Colbert has completed

  • Medical school (six years)
  • Medical internship (one year)
  • Basic surgical training (two years)
  • Advanced training in Plastic Surgery (five years)
  • Sub-speciality fellowship training in Oxford (one year)
  • Sub-speciality fellowship training in Melbourne (six months)

The level of plastic surgery training in Australia is generally regarded as being world class, and results in a qualification called the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Plastic Surgery.

Your safeguard that Dr Colbert is a fully qualified Plastic Surgeon is that he has the letters FRACS (Plast Surg) after his name, and is also affiliated with the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). These titles and memberships are only available to fully qualified Plastic Surgeons who have undergone many years of training and exams in surgery beyond the basic medical school training.

In contrast, medical practitioners calling themselves cosmetic surgeons only have to have a basic medical degree – there is no legal requirement for them to train in surgery. While many of these people are good doctors, potential patients should understand they have not done the training and passed the rigorous practical and theoretical examinations required to be entitled to the title of Plastic Surgeon.
